The recent concert Glenn Frey put on at Bell Auditorium wasn't just good, it was a marvelous musical experience. The country rock pioneer certainly hasn't lost his ability to entertain since he departed California's super-popular Eagles group. But great music wasn't the only uplifting aspect of Frey's appearance. It was that he performed as a benefit for National Science Center at Fort Discovery -- grossing a whopping $500,000 -- and this was the second straight year he did it.
Frey explains that he was "sold'' on Fort Discovery the first time he walked in. The musician was fascinated at how the center's innovative exhibits made the usually dreary disciplines of math and science so much fun for him and his kids. He decided to publicize that -- and, incidentally, to show his affection for the city of Augusta as a result of his Masters visits.
Hence, the benefits -- last year at Fort Discovery and this year's bigger show at Bell. The only proceeds Frey took were expenses for his musicians.
Paul Simon, chairman of the National Science Center's executive committee, notes it's good for our city that somebody with Frey's prestige and reputation would adopt a charity in, what is for him, a faraway community. Frey worked hard on the entertainment, said Simon, and it showed.
We join in commending this distinguished musician for his contributions to Fort Discovery.
