Three of the low-cal California pop group The Eagles' key members, Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Timothy B. Schmidt, regrouped Saturday for an impromtu jam in front of approximately 1,000 music business conventioneers at the Century Plaza ballroom in Los Angeles.
The 45-minute revue, which featured the precision harmonies of "Hotel California", "Desperado", "Lyin' Eyes" that made The Eagles one of the most popular American groups of the 1970s, was simply too perfect to have been unplanned, says Toronto earwitness Steve Waxman, who attended the event on behalf of Attic records.
"Nobody sings that good without rehearsing," said Waxman of the private concert for radio and record company executives.
"It began as we expected, with Henley and his band. But after a while, Frey came up on stage, and then Schmidt. They did about 45 minutes of the classics, with standing ovations after every song. They sounded like they were in the middle of a tour."
Waxman said Henley's last words to the audience - "We'll see you this summer" - led to more speculation about a pending tour that each former Eagle has thus far refused to confirm.
Henley and Frey did announce last winter that they would collaborate on new material to augment a new greatest hits compilation project slated for release this year.
