Meeting Glenn Frey

February 2006. I went to Pebble Beach and met Glenn Frey. For those of you unfamiliar with Pebble Beach, it is a famous golf course which yearly is the site of the most prestigious of the pro/am golf tournaments. (At a pro/am golf tournament, a professional golfer is paired with an amateur but highly skilled celebrity.) During that tournament, many fans come to see their favorite stars golf, and I and my good friend were no exception. I am happy to say he surpassed all of my expectations - he is very caring and generous to his fans, even the ones who are too scared to approach him and just stand there by the fairways like idiots. (I don't know what happened to me. I have met Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Don Henley. Each time I became very hyper and babbled incessantly. But for some reason, this time, that girl was replaced by a dumbstruck scaredy-cat. I literally hid behind my friend at times. Oh man, I was pathetic.)

Most stars would have thought we were odd, shrugged us off, and continued going about their business. Some stars would probably have even been relieved that we weren't bothering them. But not Glenn Frey! He took pity on us. After we had watched him golf nearly the entire course, he came over to us, said hi, and signed stuff for us! On the second day, he also was kind enough to express sympathy when he saw we were freezing our butts off thanks to poor preparation on our part (no coats, short sleeves, strong winds, yikes!)

My only regret (besides being so uncool) was that I was not able to get a photo with him. I do have an LP that he signed, however (photo below), as well as a golf ball and a pick. (I must admit he seemed a bit dismayed when he saw that I had brought the Longbranch Pennywhistle album. I got the distinct impression that he would like to forget he ever recorded it. When he turned it over and saw his "kite" photo, he even joked, "That's just sick." This led to one of the few things I was able to choke out: "I got it on Ebay." Yeah, I'm sure he loved hearing that.)

Then, to top it all off, he thanked us for coming. He is definitely worthy of all our admiration and respect as both a musician and a man!
